New at Second Opinion: a solution to the chronic problems with plastic headlight lenses

Plastic headlight covers or lenses are a fairly recent change in technology, appearing mostly in the last 10 years. These new materials lack the long-term staying power of the glass lenses they replaced. After several years in service they begin to pit and yellow (see images below), eventually getting degraded enough to require replacement just so the driver can see the road – especially at night, when you need it most !

The current bad solution

In response to consumer complaints about obscured headlight output and the unusually high cost of a plastic lens replacement (about $200 to $500 each! Ouch!), many new products have sprouted up to correct lens problems. They all involve "hand sanding" the plastic lens to remove the yellowing and pits, and then the application of some type of restorative solution.

Well, I have tried them all! Here is the scoop…The refinishing process is nearly impossible plus very time consuming, and the results are sucky at best.

A better solution !

Driven to find the answer to the problme of plastic lenses, I began to look into plastic refinishing for professional applications. I found wildly expensive kits with special materials not readily available. So off to the parts store I went.

Finding what seemed reasonable supplies and product I set out to learn a new craft, "headlight fixer-upper-guy". Here's some pictures of my lens refinishing in progress:

After 6 months of experimentation and perfecting my technique, the results are in!

Yes, it IS possible to fix your damaged plastic lens—AND it looks great! Can you beleive this before and after comparison below !?

These refinished lenses will pass the proper amount of light again and look like new. My process only takes 1/2 hour per lens to complete!

But now you know—it is possible to repair those yellowed and pitted plastic lenses!
